I'm having some thoughts

It's unusual, I know.

I have been thinking more and more about voice lessons. I have always wanted to do them, but they are really expensive and I never really saw the benefit of spending all that money on them, if I wasn't going to record an album or anything. My parents had no money when I was little and they spent what they did have on my sister and me. We both took piano lessons and were overly involved in sports, not to mention our excellent private school education (let's not get into a debate about public vs. private schools, because that's not the point here). Once in college, I revisited the idea, but again wondered what the point would be if I didn't go anywhere with it. Also, my ass was broke.

My ass is still broke, but something has changed. I feel more inspired to pursue my vocal talent, no matter how limited it may be. Do I need to have a successful music career to benefit from voice lessons? I've been feeling more connected to music as I get older. My range isn't what it used to be because I haven't really sung in forever, but I feel like it's still there.

So now I'm revisiting the idea and want to know what people's thoughts are about it. I know some people have heard me sing for real, but most have not, so for all you know I totally suck. But, let's assume for the sake of this that I'm not tone deaf, but I'm also no [insert incredible artist of choice here, i.e. Whitney Houston, old school Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, etc.]. Does anyone know of a good voice coach? Am I being narcissistic or is this like getting a personal trainer to get in shape?

Thoughts?

  2. i've heard you sing and you have a beautiful voice!! you should totally get voice lessons if you want. i always wanted private lessons when i played violin, cuz i felt like just being in orchestra wasn't enough, but i never did it either cuz my parents didn't have the $. you're making your own money now and sounds like this is something you're really passionate about, so you should totally do it!

  4. Do it because then you'll have no excuse when I ask you to sing for me! Also, you strike me as the kind of person who doesn't spend a lot of herself and doesn't give herself many presents (as I do-oops!), so I think you are allowed to pursue hobbies. I think you've earned that right after working your butt off academically and professionally. I won't even make you dedicate your first album to me. :)
