HMD: Carrie Prejean

So I know everyone is already sick of this whole business, but here's my deal with Carrie Prejean.
The girl gave a bad response to a controversial question. It wasn't bad because she said she didn't believe in gay marriage. It was bad for a number of other reasons:
  • She called traditional marriage (between two people of the opposite sex) "opposite marriage"
  • She gave her response and then quickly added "no offense." Not only does that totally discredit whatever she said before it, it doesn't mean that people can't get offended.
  • She said in one of the many interviews she did after the Miss USA contest (which is apparently not the same as Miss America) that she was afraid that she would have to answer that question, and as soon as they said that Perez was the one who was going to be asking her, she knew. Really?!?!?! You knew that particular question was a possibility, prepared for it, and the answer you gave was really the best you could come up with?
So here's my deal. I feel like, if she had answered it the way she did and then proceeded to shut her mouth, we would have heard about it for the next two or three days and then her 5 minutes would have been over. Obviously Perez would have talked about her, but she was a beauty queen that lost a competition. Who the hell cares?

The problem was that Ms. Prejean proceeded to go on several television and radio shows and discuss the whole thing and talk about how Satan was tempting her, but she heard God say that he wanted to work through her, blah, blah, blah. She also claimed that her answer was biblically correct, and since she is a biblical scholar, I think we should all believe her. And this was all apparently violating her contract because she didn't consult with the Miss California people first.
That's when the first photo was released showing her in her underwear with no top on. This was also a violation of her contract mostly because she had not told the Miss California people about it, aka she lied. Her excuse was pretty pathetic but believable. She was young and the photographer was just a friend (either a very bad friend or a gay friend apparently since the pictures were released).

Then America learned that Carrie got breast implants and the pageant people paid for it. I guess she decided to let Satan win that one. Furthering the objectification of women and "enhancing"your God-given body = not a big deal. Legally allowing gays equal rights = SIN!!!!!!

Then the final set of pictures were released where Carrie is looking straight into the camera wearing either underwear or a swimsuit bottom and a vest thingy which was open. In at least two of those picture, you can see her boob and she is looking right at the camera, posing. Her excuse for these pictures was that it was windy and while she was readjusting things the photographer sneakily snapped some titty pics. Really?!?!? WTF?!?!?! The best thing you people could come up with was windy? She's looking right at the camera and posing!

A lot of the people who are coming to her defense are saying that she has been attacked because she voiced her opinion. Look, it's possible some of this stuff would have come out after the Miss USA pageant, but I doubt it. Does anyone still watch it? When she began parading around national TV saying how God has chosen her to tell everyone about the evilness of homosexuality she started something. And when you go around trying to get your 15 minutes at the expense of a large group of people, you're gonna piss people off they are going to start digging.

Carrie keeps talking about how she has been "punished" and how voicing her opinion is her right. My opinion is that this woman is a hypocritical, self-righteous, self-centered, ignorant embarrassment and I feel like I am being punished every time she opens her mouth.

God talked about removing the plank from your own eye before trying to remove the tiny splinter from your friend's eye. Before Carrie can criticize all gays who want to been seen as equals in the country, she should look at how and why she has the right to vote, to speak, to get fake boobs, and to take topless pictures. And maybe she really feels like God is talking to her, but don't you think he would mention the fake boobs?

By the way, the girl who actually won Miss USA was Kristen Dalton.

HMD: Gay Marriage

I am definitely no expert on this gay marriage business, but I do know where I stand on several issues relating to this topic:
  • I don't think sexuality is a choice. After reading so many studies in my psychology classes, it seems clear to me that sexuality is something that is determined before birth. Researchers have found predictors of homosexuality in fetuses and young children (View study here).
  • I don't think any individual should be discriminated for any reason, even if people believe sexuality is a choice. It is a choice for a woman to have a baby, but it is illegal for an employer to ask her that in an interview. Religion is arguably a choice and I cannot be discriminated against for my choice of faith.
  • While I feel it is ideal for a child to have a male and a female parent, I think that what really matters is whether the child is loved and cared for. If two people are willing to give a child a home and love him/her, I don't care if they are both mommies.
  • I hate it when people use deception and lies to get what they want. If you believe something is truly wrong, develop an argument why. Don't lie about it. Let me know why you feel the way you do, and even if I don't agree with it, I will try to understand and respect it. But if I discover that your arguments are all fiction, I will assume that you are stupid, wrong, desperate, a bigot, or immoral. That doesn't do much for your argument.
  • I have no problem with a faith, religion, or church refusing to conduct or recognize a gay marriage. The Catholic church doesn't even recognize heterosexual marriages conducted outside of the Catholic church. The government, on the other hand, is different.
I found this video and feel like it addresses a lot of the issues that I have heard and knew were off, but didn't know quite why. I think it is really worth watching. Even if you don't agree with everything he says, I think you can appreciate his thorough analysis of common anti-gay attacks.

Thoughts anyone?
