HMD- Rihanna and Chris Brown

I'm so sick of people say shit like, "Rihanna needs to think about the message it sends young girls if she gets back with Chris. She's a role model." It's infuriating.

First of all, any parent who is comfortable with society deciding who their children's role models are is lazy, stupid, or living under a rock. The people our society put on a pedestal are flawed. They are thrown into a life of fame and fortune and often make bad choices. Off the top of my head, I think of Britney Spears, Alex Rodriguez, Roger Clemens, Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, Kate Moss, Michael Phelps, and Amy Winehouse. They have not signed contracts to be good people and good role models. They signed a contract to entertain. When these people screw up, parents should take the opportunity to talk to their kids about it. For example, parents can take the Rihanna situation and talk with their kids, especially their daughters about domestic abuse. Ask their kids why they think Rihanna is staying with Chris, if they think that's a good idea. Discuss red flags to look out for, the importance of self respect, the importance of respecting their bodies. They can also address Rihanna's alleged decision to go back to Chris. How it seems so irrational and dangerous, but how intoxicating "love," abusers, and relationships can be. In the case of A-Rod, parents and coaches should point out to kids/athletes that A-Rod, an incredible athlete, will forever have his reputation tarnished and his accomplishments questioned because of his steroid use. He cheated and because of that his records no longer speak for themselves. Cheating took away all his claim to greatness and excellence.

Secondly, Rihanna does not need to be thinking about how people are going to look at this or how it will affect others. She has just been the victim or a horrific crime. Her priority should be to heal. She can do whatever she wants and society may think it's wrong or stupid, but we all make mistakes in our lives and she is entitled to do the same.

Also, Nickelodeon does have a responsibility to the kids that watch their network and they are freaking idiots for not pulling Chris Brown. Letting him do it was a pussy move. Accommodating Chris Brown is inexcusable.

I know it's late in the game, but I had to get that off my chest.
